Teen Mental and Physical Health

Back to school! Why does this time fill us with dread? While I normally see it as a time to reset, it can get emotionally bumpy, and quite frankly, fraught! Here are some resources to help manage mental and physical health as we start the new school year. I hope you find these resources helpful.

The Emotional Lives Of Teenagers
The author and psychologist Lisa Damour, PhD has become a celebrity among parents of teenagers.

In her most recent book, The Emotional Lives Of Teenagers, she shares how we can support a teenager who feels stressed about their demanding schedule. The real question is whether teens have sufficient time to recover between intervals of stress.

It’s similar to strength training, if people don’t rest between weight-lifting workouts, they can get injured. But with rest, they gain strength. Are these demands so great that our teens are not getting enough sleep? Or have no time to see friends? If they’re saying yes to questions like that, the teenager’s schedule needs to be revisited. Yes to this!

The Importance Of Teen Nutrition
At 31st State we often discuss teen nutrition as it relates to their skin. Equally important is nutrition for brain power and well-being. This talk I did with nutritionist Lucy Miller is filled with tips for supporting our teens with acne, sleep, mood, and the big discussion amongst teen boys, protein powders!

Be Healthy Within
This time of year is a bumpy emotional ride for all, and I love Carolyn Collins (Be Healthy Within) for her insights and focus on helping teens regulate emotions (and us, too!).I highly recommend visiting her on Instagram

Here's to raising healthy, happy teens!
