Life is messy, but you don’t have to be. At 31st State, it’s more than personal care, it’s a state of mind. It’s the confidence to show up as yourself — effortless, cool and rooted in care—for your skin, your self, and the planet.
When our founder Stephanie’s teenage sons started having skin problems, she saw the toll it took on their self-esteem so she did what moms do, she googled ‘teenage skin care.’ After lackluster results, she quickly learned that her friends were in the same endless search for solutions as she was. Frustrated that there was genuinely nothing on the market that worked well, wasn’t elbow-deep in unnecessary chemicals, aspirational and stylish for her boys, Stephanie got to work!
Growing up in California, the 31st State, Stephanie drew upon her childhood for inspiration: the laidback energy of the west coast, an effortless simplicity, a clean and natural approach every day. She teamed up with leading chemists and after 3 years of research and development, Stephanie introduced 31st State — a line of skin, body and hair care products, free of known toxins, simple, easy-to-use, smelled like the Pacific air of home and looked great in his bathroom (or dopp kit).

We will do nearly anything for our kids, but what's the point if the planet they inhabit is under threat? Our children and the planet’s well-being is at the forefront of what we do. Sustainability is a part of every decision we make and are continually updating our sustainability measures as data grows.
We believe that safety, great design and a superior user experience can co-exist with sustainability. We choose ingredients that aren’t harmful to our son’s bodies or the planet they live on. At 31st State, we manufacture according to the European Union Standards, banning over 1300+ ingredients.
